Remanufacturing: Step by step

The owner of a piece of equipment identifies the need to obtain a new sprocket or gear to replace one that has been in use or when a stockroom piece is about to be put into service. (Recognizing the need to identify the specifications of a machine part before it fails in service will make the remanufacturing process easier, but many times the need to replace a part is only discovered when a piece of equipment breaks down or begins to seriously malfunction.)

Samples, drawings and/or descriptions are submitted to Linn Gear Co.

The materials submitted are evaluated for remanufacturing. General overall measurements are taken and a sketch including data necessary for quoting a price is created. We may request that additional information be supplied before we quote a price for supplying a replacement. Any information requested at this stage is needed to determine whether or not we can reproduce the part at all. We push the limits of our capabilities every day, but there are limits.

The evaluation of the sample materials is then given to our Sales Department for bid calculation.

Product samples are tagged and held in temporary storage.

After we have collected information adequate to establish a price for reproducing a part and an approximate manufacturing time, the bid will be submitted by fax or phone, with a formal copy following in the mail. We will describe the materials and finishing processes that will be used. End users should scrutinize this material closely and ask any questions they may have. Sometimes we will suggest changes to the design or material of a product which we believe will improve its performance. Other times we will have to quote alternatives to the original due to an inability to reproduce the part exactly to its original specifications.

If our bid is accepted and an order placed we will begin the process of precisely defining the parameters of the part. The part is measured with a variety of instruments and tools so that critical specifications may be defined.
